PROJECT UPDATE
JULY 2022

Conversion of a Stasi Records Archive, Chemnitz

This project consisted in the conversion of a two-storey building that was built in the 1960s and formerly occupied by computer manufacturer Robotron into a modern archive for Stasi records. Work on the building shell, interior fit-out and the installation of technical systems designed to protect the records began in spring 2021. The completion of work in interior areas was followed by the handing over of the keys to the user in June 2022. 87,000 archive boxes in depots fitted with rolling shelf systems at the heart of the building offer sufficient capacity for the storage of the records.

The final phase of the project involved the construction and coating of a protruding steel roof with an area of approx. 130 m². The roof creates a symbolic connection between the new Chemnitz branch of the National Stasi Records Archive and the neighbouring State Archive in the Peretzhaus.

Kaiser Baucontrol was responsible for the delivery of project management and site management services.
