PROJECT UPDATE
MARCH 2023

Goethe Theatre and spa facilities, Bad Lauchstädt

The federal state of Saxony-Anhalt is home to the spa town of Bad Lauchstädt with its historic spa facilities and Goethe Theatre, and therefore boasts Germany’s most important Goethe memorial site outside of the cultural assets managed by Klassik Stiftung Weimar in Thuringia.

The ensemble of buildings at the heart of Bad Lauchstädt is characterised by the widespread preservation of their original building fabric, with some original interior design elements also surviving to this day. As such, the ensemble acts as a cultural repository where classical German literature can be experienced in a highly authentic form.

The construction project is split into the following subprojects, which also include adjacent outdoor areas:

Douche Pavilion
Refurbishment of the façade and roof, renovation of interior areas in preparation for a permanent exhibition on the history of the spa town of Bad Lauchstädt.

Assembly Room and Bath House
Assembly Room: Restoration and modernisation, including the replacement of flooring and windows, the restoration of painted wall and ceiling decorations, the installation of a heating system and the conversion of some sections of the attic to create storage space. Bath House: Refurbishment, including the creation of accommodation and office space. Other measures: Construction of a new foyer between the Assembly Room and the Bath House.

Goethe Theatre
Phase 1: Refurbishment of the half-timbered facade and roof truss, including the insulation and recladding of the roof and the installation of a ventilation system. Phase 2: Refurbishment of the building interior, including the restoration of wall, ceiling and floor surfaces in keeping with historical models.
