The building is located at Coquistraße 16 E and ranks among Magdeburg’s most important cultural monuments. Originally built as a lavish imperial-era tram depot, from 1945 onwards it was mainly used as a sports hall and later as commercial premises. In the years prior to the conversion project it was used as a warehouse.
The overall complex is covered by two elongated, barrel-like mansard roofs that are parallel to one another and have been subdivided to create a comb-like layout that alternates between residential blocks and open courtyards. The main section of the building will remain within the historic building envelope, with plans foreseeing three full floors housing apartments with balconies or terraces. An underground car park is set to be created under the main hall.
The concept foresees the use of the building for residential purposes, with 144 apartments and a 126-space underground car park planned. Construction started in September 2019, with the completion of apartments and shared areas due in December 2022.
