Stasi Records Archive, Chemnitz branch – conversion and refurbishment

This project consisted in the refurbishment and conversion of a two-storey building that was built in the 1960s and formerly occupied by computer manufacturer Robotron into a modern regional archive for Stasi records. The gutting of the entire building was followed by the adaptation of the building shell to the requirements of the new user. The minimal, technical nature of interior fit-out reflects the building’s industrial past, while a new corrugated metal façade hangs gently around the building like a curtain. The installation of new windows and complex technical systems serves to protect the archive’s sensitive contents and keep conditions around them constant.

The planning application was submitted in May 2020 and approved in December 2020. Work on the building shell and façade began in spring 2021. The building was handed over to the tenant (BStU, the national body responsible for Stasi records) in April-June 2022.

The signing of the lease was preceded by experiments used to test the load-bearing capacity of the storey partition beneath the rolling shelf system.
